Planet Fitness set to open in Puyallup, Tacoma

Two new Planet Fitness locations will open this year in the Tacoma area.

These are not the first in the state, but they are the first for Kevin Kelly and his co-investors, who started a dozen Planet Fitness locations in the Phoenix area.

The first to open in this area will be this July in Puyallup in a former Kmart on River Road. Kelly said the club is now offering memberships for $10 per month, with an upgraded membership at $20 that allows members to work out at any Planet Fitness location and access to unlimited tanning and hydro-massage.

The second location will open in early fall at a former Sears property near McKinley Avenue and East 72nd Street in Tacoma’s South End neighborhood.

Kevin Kelly, one of several investors in the project, said the Tacoma area is ripe for the fitness market.

One of the investors is from Tacoma, Kelly said. The group hopes to open at least 10 Planet fitness locations, and Kelly said they are on the hunt for more sites.

The timeline for the other locations is “ASAP,” Kelly said. “The only restriction we have is real estate.”
