Tire fire in Federal Way burns into night
Firefighters in Federal Way knocked down a once-raging tire fire Thursday evening, according to South King Fire & Rescue.
The fire burned among tires and other debris at South 344th Street and 19th Avenue South, the department posted on Twitter. It was called in about 4:35 p.m., Capt. Jeff Bellinghausen told The News Tribune.
The fire started at an abandoned home in a commercial district.
“We had a difficult time finding our way back here through the chained-off roads,” Bellinghausen said.
Because tire fires are so stubborn, a foam truck from Boeing Field was called out to the scene to help extinguish the blaze.
“We’ll be here for several hours,” Bellinghausen said about 6 p.m. “We want to make sure this is completely out, and that will take us well into the night.”
Staff photographer Drew Perine contributed to this report.
