A series of brush fires burned Saturday afternoon along state Route 512 in Puyallup.
The fires started about 2 p.m. and span from Canyon Road East to South Meridian in the median of SR 512.
The fires may have been caused by a motorhome with an exhaust that was sparking, Washington State Patrol spokeswoman Shaneka Phillips said. Troopers are investigating the reports.
The East Pioneer exits of SR 512 were closed due to the fires, and the left lanes of both directions of the freeway were closed near South Meridian. Washington state Department of Transportation workers are assisting troopers with lane closures while Central Pierce Fire & Rescue crews fight the brush fires.
Phillips advised drivers to find alternate routes through East Pierce County.
“Definitely use different routes if possible, and just understand, be patient,” she said. “They’re trying to put the fires out and make sure nothing else is going to catch fire in the process.”
