It might have been poor practice rather than a scam.
On Tuesday, East Pierce Fire & Rescue warned residents that women wearing generic firefighter shirts were going door to door, offering free home safety inspections.
Officials worried it might be a scam and the women were casing houses.
Now, it’s possible the women are working for a business that offers home inspections.
“We have no way for sure to know if this activity is being conducted by a legitimate business or not,” Chief Bud Backer said Wednesday. “As such, we still recommend that you use caution prior to allowing any stranger access to your home.”
East Pierce firefighters would be wearing uniforms and able to show proper identification, the department said.
