Pedestrian killed by hit-and-run driver, police say

A woman crossing a street in Tacoma’s South End was struck and killed Thursday night, according to police.

The incident happened about 7:15 p.m. in the 8700 block of South Hosmer Street, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Cool said. Pierce County medical examiners have not released her identity pending the notification of her next of kin.

She was crossing Hosmer Street from east to west without a crosswalk when she was struck, Cool said Friday.

“She got past the northbound lanes OK, but when she crossed into the southbound lanes, she got struck by a southbound traveling Jeep Cherokee, which continued without stopping,” Cool said.

The Jeep was later recovered at an apartment complex in the 9600 block of Hosmer Street, but the driver remains at large.
