1 dead, 6 injured in University Place crash

Six people were seriously injured and one woman died in a two-vehicle crash that occurred about 1 a.m. Saturday in University Place, police said.

The accident was at 27th Street West and Bridgeport Way.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman who died as 28-year-old Kasandra Moffett, of Tacoma.

A University Place resident, in his 30s, was arrested and jailed on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. He was also booked on suspicion of eluding police and driving with a suspended license.

Five people in one car, some residents of University Place and others from Tacoma, were taken to local hospitals, Police Chief Mike Blair said. The woman who died was a passenger in the car.

A passenger in the truck driven by the man who was arrested was also injured and taken to a hospital.

All were in stable condition after the wreck, and were expected to survive.

Blair said the truck driver showed signs of impairment, and a blood test was conducted.
