Corrections officer, suspect shot in Auburn, police say

A state Department of Corrections officer and a suspect were shot and wounded Tuesday in Auburn, police said.

Auburn police responded to the shooting about 3 p.m. at 3428 I St. NE, where the two people were treated for their injuries, Cmdr. Steve Stocker said.

The Corrections Department confirmed Officer Kristoffer Rongen, 46, was shot in the leg. The 14-year department employee was working on a task force for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Rongen and another officer returned fire, injuring the suspect, who they were trying to arrest on a federal warrant.

Both wounded men taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

The suspect was arrested at the scene.

Neither man has life-threatening injuries, the Corrections Department said.
