Sumner student finalist for science award

Amelia Day, who attends Lakeridge Middle School in Sumner, was selected as one of 10 student finalists in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. The competition recognizes students in grades 5-8 for innovation and scientific concepts that will improve lives in their community. Day will be competing against the other finalists for a grand prize of $25,000 and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.”

She will partner with a 3M scientist this summer to help develop her project on assisting disabled people to kick a ball. Day will compete in the finals in October.

Eatonville, Auburn get computer science grants

Washington STEM and the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction recently announced additional school districts and Educational Service Districts that have been selected to receive grants to support computer science education in the 2016-17 school. The following local districts were selected: Auburn School District and Eatonville School District.

Summer meals available

The House of Prayer Foundation will be hosting a summer meal program for children in the Tacoma area.

Lunch will be served Mondays-Fridays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and breakfast will be served Sundays from 8:45-9 a.m. Meal service will be at House of Prayer, 6602 S. Ferdinand, Tacoma. For more information call 253-226-1223.

Online academy picks principal

Washington Connections Academy, a free online public school for grades K-8, has selected Mike Lunde as its principal.

The school is opening for the 2016-17 school year and will be holding online and in person information sessions across the state. For a complete schedule of events go to tinyurl.com/Washington-Connection.
