All-state boys soccer: Tahoma’s Cris Garfias a first-team forward after run to 4A state title match

Cris Garfias took the Tahoma High School boys soccer team on a memorable run to the 4A state championship match, scoring 29 goals.

The junior forward was rewarded with a 4A first-team all-state selection by the Washington State Soccer Coaches Association.

Tahoma’s run ended with a 1-0 loss to Wenatchee in the 4A title match, with Miguel Viramontes scoring the one and only goal for the Panthers. He was named the 4A most valuable player and Wenatchee coach Dennis Tronson earned coach of the year.

Curtis’ Alex Whiting and Kentwood’s Manav Gill both earned first-team 4A midfielders. Both will be back next year.

Gig Harbor junior defender Jack Sluys was selected to the first team on defense, as was Thomas Jefferson’s Nick Hall.

In 3A, Capital’s Nigel El-Sokkary was a first-team forward after a season with 30 goals and 22 assists. He was The News Tribune’s All-Area player of the year.

Auburn Mountainview’s Christian Rotter, the 3A SPSL MVP, was a first-team midfielder, as was Auburn Riverside’s Brandon Gonzalez, and Peninsula’s Bradley Keller was a first-team defender.

In 2A, Fife’s Ray Segala, the 2A SPSL MVP, was a first-team midfielder. He had 22 goals and 15 assists this year.

Charles Wright had a pair of players make the 1A team — junior forward Nick Iregui, the 1A Nisqually MVP, and senior defender Grant Young.
