Trapurito’s, the sushi burrito restaurant in Bonney Lake, has closed

Bonney Lake sushi burrito and poke bowl restaurant Trapurito’s has closed, the company announced Monday on its Facebook page.

The restaurant opened in November and operated in a shopping center just off state Route 410.

The fast-casual restaurant replaced Trapper’s Sushi, the longtime Bonney Lake restaurant that moved across the parking lot to a much larger location with a full bar.

The two restaurants shared ownership.

They were founded by Trapper O’Keeffe, who opened his first restaurant in Bonney Lake in 2004. Back then, it was called Sushi Town, but he later renamed his family of restaurants Trapper’s Sushi.

He went on to open nine other Trapper’s locations with most of those locations outside Pierce County. In Pierce County, Trapper’s operates restaurants in Bonney Lake, Parkland and South Hill. A location in Tacoma has closed, but it will reopen after a new building is constructed at that site.

When O’Keeffe opened Trapurito’s, he did so because he said sushi burritos were a widespread trend in other parts of the country but slow to enter the market here. Since Trapurito’s opened, three more restaurants serving sushi burritos and poke bowls have opened. Those restaurants are Sam Choy’s Poke to the Max in downtown Tacoma, Aloha Poke and Shaved Ice in Fircrest and I C Poke in Lakewood.

Trapurito’s had a menu offering build-your-own burritos with raw or cooked fish as the base. There also was a list of specialty sushi burritos, plus build-your-own and specialty poke bowls.
