New Xfinity Store next to Tacoma Mall opens; two food retailers also in works at site

Comcast on Wednesday announced the opening of a new store outside the Tacoma Mall at the former Pier 1 location, and it’s not the only new retailer coming to the site.

Two major food chains are planning openings in the coming months, with one relocating from the Tacoma Mall.

XFINITY

The new Xfinity Store by Comcast, 4301 S. Steele St., replaces the company’s former store at 5935 6th Ave., which closed Dec. 9.

“We want to position our stores where it is most convenient for them to come shop and explore our awesome products and services,” Andy Colley, media representative for Comcast, told The News Tribune via email on Wednesday.

Comcast has three Xfinity stores in Pierce County and 22 statewide.

A grand opening is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 18, with music and Xfinity branded items, while supplies last, for customers.

“In addition to experiencing Comcast’s industry-leading products and services, customers may receive support, turn in used equipment, pay their bills and more,” the company said in an announcement. “The new store also offers Comcast Business Mobile that provides small-to-medium sized businesses with unlimited data and 5G included for as low as $24 per line with 10 lines.”

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday-Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Customers can book appointments ahead of time by visiting xfinitystores.com.

Comcast says it has invested nearly $1 billion in technology and infrastructure in Washington during the past three years, including upgrades to its broadband network.

CHIPOTLANE, JERSEY MIKE’S

Along with the new Xfinity store, two food chains have plans to set up shop in the building that was once home to Tacoma’s Pier 1 store, which closed in early 2020.

According to information on file with the city of Tacoma, future plans for a new version of Chipotle and Jersey Mike’s are in various stages of permitting.

Plans on file with the city of Tacoma show the three sites at the former Pier 1 store location next to the Tacoma Mall. Tenant C is the new Chipotlane.

Jersey Mike’s plans were confirmed with The News Tribune earlier this fall. Kyle Potvin, media representative for Jersey Mike’s, said via email Wednesday that an opening is planned for first quarter next year, “likely in February.”

It is currently under construction.

A Chipotle site exists at the Tacoma Mall. Sally Evans, media representative for Chipotle, told The News Tribune via email the company is relocating to open a “Chipotlane” in spring 2022.

The new concept allows for a drive-thru lane for Chipotle online and app orders. A building permit for the new Chipotlane was issued Dec. 7, according to the city.
