The Fife City Council has selected Summer Andriyuk, a planning commission member and real estate broker, to replace Bryan Yambe as representative for District 1, city communications manager Kelsey Geddes confirmed to The News Tribune on Tuesday.

As previously reported by The News Tribune, Yambe was appointed to the Pierce County Council in January to replace Marty Campbell, who was elected Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer in November. Andriyuk will be sworn in March 25, Geddes said.

A resident of the Benthien Loop neighborhood, 32-year-old Andriyuk has served on the Fife Planning Commission since summer 2023 and is self-employed as a managing broker with John L. Scott Real Estate, she told The News Tribune on Wednesday. Andriyuk said she is married with two sons and applied for the position because she thought she was well-suited for it and wanted to have a bigger impact improving the city and serving its residents.

Andriyuk said she has worked extensively on Fife’s 2024-2044 Comprehensive Plan and zoning code updates, which are expected to be approved in June and will have impacts on homeowners and businesses. Other city issues Andriyuk deemed important include creating a more vibrant downtown, making the city more walkable, promoting more middle and affordable housing and maintaining Fife’s “small town” charm, she said.

“I really look forward to representing the city the best way that I possibly can, bringing transparency and trust to my position,” she said. “I think that the city residents and business owners all deserve to always feel that they can trust their government members and know that they have their best interests.”

In response to questions from the council, Andriyuk said she is a “highly skilled communicator,” active listener and collaborator. Andriyuk is active in her church and volunteers in outreach programs.

Andriyuk will serve on the City Council until the November election. Whoever is chosen by voters then will serve the remainder of Yambe’s term, which expires Dec. 31, 2027, city manager Derek Matheson said earlier this year. Andriyuk said she would consider running for re-election in November if she does well in the position and with its time commitment.

The job is classified as part-time, with council members making $1,060.90 a month as of Jan. 1, Matheson said.
