Meet The News Tribune’s new service journalism reporter, Minnie Stephenson

Greetings, Tacoma. I’m The News Tribune’s new service journalism reporter.

I cover mostly restaurant and business news. You might’ve seen my stories on the influx of chicken restaurants around the Tacoma Mall or how businesses along State Route 410 were dealing with the impacts of the road closure from the floods.

I come from the south of Boston, but I’m already being converted to the PNW way of life. I’m excited to keep exploring this beautiful part of the country!

A little about me: I graduated from the University of Maryland with a journalism degree in 2024. In college, I served as news editor for the on-campus publication Stories Beneath the Shell, interned at the Portland Press Herald in Portland, Maine, and found my love for community journalism. Additionally, I spent over a year working at the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism, collaborating on the Associated Press investigation “Lethal Restraint,” which was named a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2025.

Before coming to The News Tribune, I also worked as a news writer for WBZ NewsRadio in Boston.

As a reporter, I want to make sure your questions are answered. My stories are meant to be informative, whether that means helping you find where to celebrate on New Year’s Eve or highlighting new businesses in your neighborhood.

I feel very fortunate to serve a community that I’ve already grown to love, and I’m eager to learn more.

When I’m not reporting, you can find me singing in a local choir or watching Maryland basketball (go Terps!)

If you have any tips or ideas for stories, you can reach me at minnie.stephenson@thenewstribune.com or find me on X @minniewsteph.
