A 25-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of killing his father and brother, who were shot to death and discovered last month in a Gig Harbor-area house fire, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, was taken into custody shortly after 9 a.m., suspected of first-degree murder and arson, the Sheriff’s Office said in an online post.
“The motive behind the double homicide is still being investigated,” the office said. “There are no other suspects outstanding.”
Sheriff’s spokesperson Carly Cappetto told The News Tribune that the suspect was arrested in the 9300 block of Washington Boulevard Southwest in Lakewood, where he had been staying.
Oliverio Huitron-Rosalez, 64, and Alejandro Huitron Campos, 31, were each killed by a gunshot wound to the head in a newly rented home in the 15600 block of 14th Avenue Northwest, according to the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Their bodies were discovered on April 8 by authorities who responded to a house fire. Neighbors had reported hearing a large explosion before the blaze began and engulfed the home.
Body-camera footage released Tuesday of the arrest showed the suspect with his hands cuffed behind his back as he stood with Sheriff’s SWAT team members near a SWAT vehicle. The department’s SWAT team and special investigations unit made the apprehension, “putting an end to this long investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
Cappetto said the suspect was “pretty compliant” and that there was no one else in the home.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Pierce County Fire Marshal were credited with playing “a huge role” in the investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Office, who also expressed thanks to community members who had stepped forward with tips in the case.
