Man stabbed to death in Tacoma identified by medical examiner

The victim in a Tacoma stabbing last week has been identified.

According to the Pierce County Medical Examiner Office’s public portal, the man is 53-year-old Martoni Elviran Newton. The portal says he lived in Lakewood at the time of his death.

The office listed his cause of death as a stab wound to his right thigh. It ruled the manner of death a homicide.

The News Tribune previously reported on the stabbing, which happened the evening of Sunday, May 24.

The Tacoma Police Department said it received the initial report at about 8:30 p.m. when officers were dispatched to a local hospital for a report of a possible stabbing victim.

Some unidentified people brought Newton to the hospital, TPD previously said, and he died at the facility before officers arrived. They later found a crime scene in the 1200 block of South M Street, in the Hilltop neighborhood.

A woman was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of second-degree murder on Monday, May 25, The News Tribune previously reported. She was released from Pierce County Jail at 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26, without charges.

Adam Faber, spokesperson for the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, told The News Tribune the case is in “pending” status, for “further police investigation.”

The News Tribune does not generally name suspects before they are charged.
