Boy fatally shot on Joint Base Lewis-McChord identified

A 13-year-old boy who died after being shot in the face by a friend near Lakewood has been identified as Alexander Demello.

He was shot Oct. 20 while walking in a wooded area of Joint Base Lewis-McChord with his 14-year-old brother and 17-year-old friend. He died Sunday after several days in the hospital.

The victim’s brother told investigators he heard a gunshot as they walked, looked back and saw his brother on the ground and the 17-year-old holding a gun.

The older boy ran off and shortly afterward gave a backpack containing bloody clothing and a handgun to a friend, charging papers state.

He later told investigators he and the victim were passing the gun back and forth and it went off when he “fidgeted with it,” records show.

The 17-year-old was charged with third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Deputy prosecutor Kevin Benton said charges have not been amended since Demello’s death and the 17-year-old will appear in court Dec. 1.
