These players with Washington high school ties were selected in the 2023 MLB Draft

Several players with ties to high schools across Washington were selected in the 2023 MLB Draft.

Here’s a look at the full list, which includes eight college players and four high school players, and nine pitchers and three position players.

Cole Fontenelle

3B

Skyline H.S., TCU

Los Angeles Angels | Round 7, No. 204 overall

Fontenelle played in 65 games his first season at TCU, starting 63, appearing at first and third base, left field and designated hitter. Hit .352/.473/.639 with 66 runs scored, 21 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 58 RBI and 20 stolen bases on the way to All-Big 12 honorable mention honors. Led TCU — which reached the College World Series semifinals — in batting average, on-base and slugging percentage, doubles and tied for the team lead in triples. Also played one season each at Washington and McLennan Community College prior to TCU.

Owen Wild

Gig Harbor H.S., Gonzaga

Tampa Bay Rays | Round 7, No. 213 overall

Paced Gonzaga’s rotation this season with a 4.93 ERA and 1.42 WHIP in a team-high 15 starts, and struck out 105 across 95 innings. Also led the program with a 9-1 record and 3.03 ERA in 16 appearances (eight starts) in 2022, striking out 83 across 74-1/3 frames. A former standout at Gig Harbor, Wild’s senior season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but he was the Class 3A SSC MVP as a junior in 2019 and a TNT All-Area first-teamer.

Case Matter

Jackson H.S., Washington

Texas Rangers | Round 10, No. 291 overall

Matter has appeared in 19 games each of the past two seasons for the Huskies, primarily in relief, and posted a 4-1 record and 3.91 ERA this spring in helping UW reach the NCAA regionals. Struck out 34 batters across 25-1/3 frames and tallied five saves on the way to All-Pac-12 honorable mention honors in 2023. A former Jackson standout, Matter’s senior season was canceled by the COVID-19 pandemic, but he was a 4A Wesco first-teamer as both a pitcher and infielder as a junior in 2019.

Maxton Martin

Texas Rangers | Round 11, No. 321 overall

Left-handed-hitting Martin paced Southridge in nearly every offensive category this spring on the way to earning 4A/3A MCC first-team honors in the outfield for the second consecutive season. Top-ranked outfielder in the state in the 2023 class by Perfect Game. Oregon commit.

Stu Flesland III

Mount Spokane H.S., Washington

Colorado Rockies | Round 11, No. 322 overall

An All-Pac-12 first-team selection, Flesland posted a 7-2 record, 4.12 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 16 starts this season for a Huskies team that reached the NCAA regionals. Struck out 81 batters across 89-2/3 frames. Has posted a 10-7 record and 4.08 ERA in 73 appearances (22 starts) the past three seasons at UW, striking out 150 across 169-2/3. Also pitched one season at Boise State as a freshman in 2020. A former standout at Mount Spokane, Flesland posted a 0.19 ERA his senior season in 2019, earning Greater Spokane League first-team honors.

Nestor German

Chief Sealth H.S., Seattle U

Baltimore Orioles | Round 11, No. 331 overall

German tallied a team-high 15 starts for Seattle U this season, and appeared in 17 total, posting a 5.97 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Struck out 74 batters across 78-1/3 frames. An established starter in the program’s rotation the past three years, German also made 30 appearances (18 starts) during his freshman and sophomore seasons.

Lincoln (Seattle) H.S.

Milwaukee Brewers | Round 12, No. 362 overall

The state’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2023 and the 3A Metro League co-MVP, Johnson posted an 8-1 record and 0.83 ERA for a Lincoln program that won the Class 3A championship this spring. Struck out 105 batters across 67-1/3 innings. Top-ranked player in Washington in the 2023 class by Perfect Game. Auburn commit.

Jacob Bresnahan

Sumner H.S.

Cleveland Guardians | Round 13, No. 398 overall

Sumner ace led the Spartans to the Class 4A state championship game this spring and posted a 9-1 record and 0.88 ERA, striking out 95 batters across 64 innings. Also hit .393 with 11 doubles, four home runs and 33 RBI. 4A SPSL player of the year and TNT All-Area player of the year. Oregon commit.

Will Simpson

Skyline H.S., Washington

Oakland A’s | Round 15, No. 436 overall

A two-time All-Pac-12 first-teamer, Simpson posted a .335/.418/.643 slash line with 55 runs scored, 12 doubles, one triple, 18 home runs, 58 RBI and five stolen bases in 52 games for the Huskies this spring. Led a UW team that reached the NCAA regionals in runs scored and RBI. An everyday starter for the Huskies each of the past three seasons, Simpson has collected 40 doubles, 36 home runs and 143 RBI in 167 career games. Also previously selected in the 18th round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Pirates. Was a two-time 4A KingCo first-teamer at Skyline, and the league’s MVP in 2018.

Dylan Watts

Enumclaw H.S., Tacoma Community College

Milwaukee Brewers | Round 18, No. 542 overall

An All-NWAC first-team selection as a reliever this spring, Watts posted a 3-0 record and 0.23 ERA in 14 appearances (two starts) his first college season at TCC, striking out 42 across 38-1/3 frames. Was the 2A SPSL MVP as a senior at Enumclaw in 2022 and a TNT All-Area selection.

Spencer Green

RHP

Richland H.S.

Los Angeles Dodgers | Round 19, No. 580 overall

Richland right-hander is considered among the top five players in the state in the 2023 class by Perfect Game and the No. 3 pitching prospect. Oregon State commit.

Will Watson

RHP

Burlington-Edison H.S., San Joaquin Delta College

Seattle Mariners | Round 20, No. 607 overall

The former Burlington-Edison standout made 19 appearances (five starts) for San Joaquin Delta this spring, posting a 5-1 record and 2.97 ERA. Struck out 82 batters across 57 2/3 innings. Also played one college season at Cal Lutheran. USC commit.
