Fitness chain expanding in Puyallup, Tacoma beer bar adds cafe, other biz news

A new fitness option is coming to Puyallup.

Planet Fitness is set to open at 4102 S. Meridian before the end of the year, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The new location is part of a business plaza with other stores like Best Buy, Boot Barn, Men’s Warehouse and Ross Dress for Less.

Planet Fitness has one other location in Puyallup on River Road, along with three Tacoma locations.

Downtown Tacoma beer bar now a cafe by day

The Rusty Goat in Tacoma has become a cafe as well as a beer bar, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The cafe, open six days a week at 712 Opera Alley, offers coffee, tea, sweet treats and other snacks like soft pretzels and ozaku pans (bread with savory fillings) from Seattle’s Umami Kushi.

Coffee shop managers Meggin Gardner and Sarah Pizzuto told The News Tribune that muffins and sandwiches are also on the way.

When The Rusty Goat opened in 2022, there were plans to serve as a coffee shop by day, but those plans didn’t materialize until now.

The Rusty Goat coffee shop is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Popular burger, beignet spot coming to Puyallup

Radnor’s Burgers & Beignets is opening a second location in Puyallup, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The burger joint first opened in Tacoma in 2024, serving up inexpensive smash burgers with housemade “Rad” sauce.

The menu includes chicken sandwiches, wings, fries and onion rings with an array of dipping sauces. Beignets are served with caramel dipping sauce.

The new Puyallup location will be a food trailer outside of Firemind Brewing at 211 W. Stewart Ave. Anticipated hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m Sunday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

New opening timeline for Gig Harbor ice cream, candy shop

Couple of Scoops, an ice cream and candy shop set to open in May, is now looking to open in early June, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The shop, 5500 Olympic Dr. NW, Suite H-103, will serve two dozen flavors of ice cream with dairy and gluten-free options. There will also be a 50-foot candy wall.

Couple of Scoops had a planned opening of May 1, but “construction hiccups” and shipping delays moved that date back, according to recent Facebook posts.

The shop will provide job opportunities for people with disabilities. Anticipated hours are noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

New play cafe opening on Key Peninsula

Sea Play Café, a cafe and children’s play area, is set to open in early July on the Key Peninsula, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The cafe, 11901 137th Ave. NW, is meant to feel almost like a “vacation spot,” co-owner Ashley Pepowski told The News Tribune.

Sea Play Café will have a Pacific Northwest theme, and will feature a play area with a lighthouse, a fire station where kids can dress up like firefighters and fight pretend flames on a magnetic wall, and a restaurant with a pretend pizza oven.

The play area is designed for children up to 8 years old. Monthly memberships will go for $50, while the owners plan to price daily passes at $14.

Gig Harbor loses donut shop, Japanese Steakhouse

Milkvue Handcrafted Donuts and Coffee has closed its brick-and-mortar shop in Gig Harbor, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The shop, 4901 Point Fosdick Dr. NW, Suite B600, opened in 2019. Customers could find cake donuts and mochi donuts in flavors like ube, horchata, blueberry lavender and lemon with Fruity Pebbles.

Milkvue will continue to sell its treats at lots of local grocery stores, cafés and bubble tea shops, including Metropolitan Market, Olympia Coffee, Seattle Fish Guys and Uwajimaya.

Over in the Peninsula Shopping Center, Mizu Steakhouse has permanently closed, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The Japanese steakhouse, 3116 Judson St., did not renew its annual permit. The chain also has locations in Renton and Covington.

Mizu Steakhouse featured hibachi dining with appetizers, grilled meats, rice and vegetables, or choose from various combos of beef, chicken and seafood. The menu also included a variety of sushi.
