Iconic Tacoma diner closes after nearly 90 years

Knapp’s Restaurant and Lounge in Tacoma’s Proctor District has closed, as previously reported by The News Tribune.

The diner and bar at 2707 N. Proctor St. has been in business since 1938, first opening as a delicatessen and then transitioning to a breakfast, lunch and dinner operation.

A sign was posted to the front door of Knapp’s on Monday, June 8, reading “Knapp’s is closed. Thank you for the memories. We’ve enjoyed serving you.”

Owner Billy Brewer, who took over Knapp’s last August, later told The News Tribune that the profitability issues were to blame, and the restaurant “ran out of time” to turn things around.
